Big Brown’s Date With Destiny, Part Two

May 17th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Hey everyone, I apologize for the absence but I had to take a step back after the Kentucky Derby. I spent a lot of time with my own thoroughbred filly, a little time at Arlington Park last weekend, and now I’m back and ready to rock!

Without getting too into things because we are just over an hour from post time, I am going to state that I believe that Big Brown will take the Preakness and it will be on to the Belmont. My little sentimental pick to come in somewhere in the top 3 - with no real basis behind the choice other than some stupid gut feeling - is Giant Moon, who was a little bit flattered by Roman Emperor’s win on the Preakness undercard (although he was unable to do anything in the Wood Memorial, so I don’t know how much it actually says about anyone at this point).

The good news is that I have been involved with some breakdown studies in my off time (nothing I can divulve at this point, sorry!), and Pimlico has been one of the safest tracks in the country in the month of May, without a singe vanned off horse. If that’s any consolation to anyone nervously preparing for the big race I don’t know, but I thought it was worth sharing.

Congrats to Big Brown. I was a bit anxious before the race with all the talk about his feet and light racing history and now with just 2 weeks rest but he was magnificent in the win.

Just so odd that Eight Belles broke down and the horse with publicized troubles was Big Brown and his feet. I was wondering what anyone read about Eight Belles necropsy. They said she had a head bruise and congestion in her lungs besides the two fractured front legs. Said the head bruise was maybe from head hitting the track. Did that happen? Or maybe she hit her head in her stall or something previous to race. What would the congestion have been from? Also read a report on Sports Illustrated or ESPN website can’t remember, that Nakatani on Colonel John told Baffert that he heard Eight Belles whinny as if she may have been in distress when Colonel John passed her on the turn. I couldn’t find any more reference to it anywhere. What turn would that have been in the Derby? Early in the race or after the finish when they were pulling her up? Couldn’t find where Coionel John passed her at any point either. Just wondering what anyone else has heard.
